Meet the Richards

Our History

How the Market started:
In 1953, James Richard Sr. and his wife, Mary, had the idea to start their own roadside farmers market. They began simply — pulling a wagon to the end of their driveway and selling peaches and apples to passing neighbors and travelers.
As word spread and customers returned, James built a small wooden shed to replace the wagon. The little stand quickly became so popular that it actually began to slow traffic along the road. Realizing they had outgrown the space, James expanded once again and constructed the farmers market building that is still in use today.
What started as a wagon at the end of a driveway became the foundation of our family farm business, and we are proud to continue serving our community generations later.
Where We Are Today
We are proudly heading into our 73rd year as a family-operated farm and farmers market.
Farmer Eddie, the son of James and Mary Richard, continues to care for the orchards, cattle, gardens, and whatever new crops he decides to grow each season. His lifelong dedication keeps the farm productive and thriving year after year.
His daughter, Kayla, manages the market — keeping the shelves stocked and the bakery cases full. She focuses on offering Virginia-made and locally produced goods whenever possible, supporting neighboring farms, small businesses, and our local community.
Together, Eddie and Kayla share a commitment to providing fresh, local, and affordable products while continuing the family tradition started generations ago.
